Lord Bertie

The most striking fact about Lord Bertie is his affinity for wet ground. On soft or muddy conditions, he wins roughly two races in every five—three wins from seven attempts. That is a genuinely useful skill in Britain, where rain is always a possibility. By contrast, racing him on faster, drier ground or standard conditions has yielded just one win from twenty-three races. This is the kind of specialist trait that makes a horse valuable to a trainer: you know exactly when he is likely to fire, and when to find something else. His last win came at Doncaster on 24 October 2025, more than a year ago now, and notably that came in wet conditions.

The puzzle is why a horse with such a clear strength has not managed a win in his last six runs. His recent form—a second place, followed by tenth, ninth, sixth, eleventh, and twelfth—suggests he has either been racing when the ground conditions suit him but he has simply not been good enough, or the yard has been running him in races above his level. He typically races at Class 3, the third tier of British racing, where he has won just once in nine attempts. That single win points to a horse who can occasionally do it at that level on the right day.

David O'Meara's Upper Helmsley yard continues to send out winners at a steady rate—101 this season—but Lord Bertie has not been among them recently. Even his regular rider, Cian Horgan, has failed to strike with him, going zero from six races. At six years old, Lord Bertie is still capable of improvement, but the absence of a win in over a year suggests he may have found his ceiling. He remains an active racehorse on the track, but one in need of a timely return to the wet ground where he genuinely thrives.
