What makes Kindest Nation genuinely interesting is how much she improves when the ground has a bit of give in it. On normal conditions, she wins roughly 1 in every 3.5 races (2 wins from 7), which is the kind of statistic that tempts trainers to plan around the weather forecast. That soft ground is her sweet spot, and Palmer has suggested that when conditions suit, he will aim higher—chasing what racing calls black type, the prize money and prestige that comes with winning at the top level. It is not an unrealistic ambition for a horse that has proved she can win; it is a matter of timing and luck with the weather.

Recent form tells a different story. She has not won in her last six races, finishing third twice but also hitting some rough patches with nine and eleventh-place finishes. At thirteen percent overall—four wins from thirty—she is a horse that pays for her keep and occasionally delivers a winner, not a prolific one. But raced just yesterday and still active, Kindest Nation remains a project in Palmer's Cheshire yard, a horse whose small beginnings and modest record hide something that caught her trainer's eye and keeps him running her. For the yard that have stuck with her this long, that 20 percent of races where she finishes in the money is enough to justify keeping her racing.
