When Kelpie Grey does race, he has clear preferences. He wins roughly one in every six or seven races overall — four victories from 42 starts — but those wins cluster around specific conditions and distances. On normal ground he is significantly sharper, winning 2 of his 13 races there; ask him to run on fast, dry ground and he becomes vulnerable. Over middle distances of seven furlongs to a mile he has won 3 of 19 races, markedly better than his form at shorter or longer trips. Most strikingly, he is a Musselburgh specialist, having won twice from just eight starts there — a genuine course affinity that suggests he could reward followers who back him specifically when he returns to that Scottish track. His last win came at Ayr on 14 May 2024, nearly two and a half years ago, so he arrives back from injury with something to prove.

Paul Mulrennan, his most frequent partner, has a notably better record aboard him than the horse manages overall: three wins from 16 races together, roughly one in five, against his career average of one in ten. That 19% win rate hints at genuine partnership value. Jim Goldie's yard at Uplawmoor has been in rich form this season, sending out 88 winners, so Kelpie Grey will return to an outfit in full flight. When the ground softens and he is pointed at courses and distances where he has proven himself, he could yet surprise those who have written him off during his long absence.
