Goldie himself is refreshingly candid about what makes Kelpie Grey tick. The horse has had a stress fracture — serious enough to require a screw — and has been on the road back since. The trainer describes him as the opposite of laid-back: all-out effort, all of the time, which is both his strength and the reason he is hard to manage. Crucially, Goldie says the horse needs wet or muddy ground to show his best. On fast, dry ground he is vulnerable. Get him on a soft surface at the right distance and Goldie's verdict is blunt: he'll be tasty.
