The career numbers are genuinely striking. Six wins and 13 placed efforts from just 13 races means Kalpana has finished in the top three in every single race it has ever run. That is a flawless placed record, and a win rate of 46% — winning nearly 1 in every 2 races — puts it among the most reliable performers in training. What makes that even more impressive is the level it competes at: four of those six wins have come in Class 1 races, the very top tier of British racing. Winning one of those is an achievement. Winning four, at four different tracks including Kempton and Hamilton, tells you this is a horse operating at genuine elite level.

The most recent form reads 1-2-2-2-3-1, which is about as consistent as it gets — only once finishing worse than second in the last six races, and bookending that sequence with two wins. The last of those was at Ascot in October 2025, now roughly five months ago. That break will attract attention from anyone watching Kalpana's return. A horse this consistent, trained by Andrew Balding — whose yard at Kingsclere has sent out 204 winners this season alone, making them one of the most productive operations in the country — will not be returning for the sake of it.

Kalpana's story started modestly enough, with a first win at Wolverhampton on an all-weather track in January 2024. Within nine months, it was winning Class 1 races at Ascot. That is a rapid climb through the ranks, and everything since has suggested the horse has not just arrived at the top level but belongs there. When it comes back from this break, it will be one of the most interesting horses to follow.
