Just An Hour

The horse arrived at Millman's yard as a project. He'd had an early promise, winning on debut at Killarney back in May 2023, and had shown enough to earn a move from Joseph O'Brien's yard in Ireland. But something wasn't quite right. He was light, short of condition, and seemingly out of sorts. For the whole of last season Millman worked to rebuild him, watching him run without success, knowing the horse had the ability but couldn't find it on the track. It was a patient job, the kind that separates the trainers who understand horses from those who just move on to the next one.

This year, it has worked. Just An Hour has won three times already — one win every ten races at the Class 4 level where he typically competes is not spectacular, but for a horse that hadn't won in three years, it's a resurrection. His recent form tells the story: third, first, fourth, third, third, fourth in his last six outings. He's not consistent — there's still work to do — but he's racing like a horse that knows how to win again. Five wins from 37 career races is not the record of a star, and his 14% win rate (roughly one win every seven races) places him firmly in the ranks of the honest campaigners. But the trajectory matters. Millman has taken a horse that looked finished and given him a purpose. With the yard sending out 42 winners this season, and Just An Hour winning last week, there's a sense that this six-year-old, however quietly, is finally on the right track.
