Johnny Boom

The numbers tell a story of modest but genuine success. Five wins from 36 races means he wins roughly one in every seven races, and that alone puts him ahead of the majority of horses that race regularly. What makes Johnny Boom interesting is not the headline figure but where those wins come from. At Wolverhampton, he is genuinely special: four wins from just ten races there suggests he understands that track in a way he does not understand others. That 40 percent win rate at one course is the kind of stat that catches a trainer's eye and makes him pitch the horse back there whenever possible. His first win came at Wolverhampton on 30 December 2022, and three of his four course successes have followed there since.

He also thrives on normal ground conditions, winning 4 of his 14 races on standard turf — a 29 percent return that stands out sharply against his overall record. The mile and a furlong to mile and two furlongs distance range is where he runs best, and at those trips on good ground at a track that suits him, Johnny Boom becomes a different proposition altogether.

The recent picture is less rosy. He has not won since October 2025 and has struggled in his last six races, managing only a couple of placed efforts. He has also drifted down the grades, now competing mostly in Class 5 races where his win rate drops to just one in eighteen — a sign, perhaps, that he is operating at the lower end of his range. Trainer Shaun Lycett's modest haul of two winners this season suggests a quiet year at Leafield, but for a horse that delivers reliably at his favourite track and in his preferred conditions, there is still value. At eight years old, Johnny Boom has probably done his best work, but horses with his kind of course knowledge do not lose it overnight.
