Insuspense

The recent form tells a similar story. Three consecutive second-place finishes in its last six outings show a horse that keeps turning up, keeps running well, and keeps getting beaten. That is either a sign that a breakthrough is imminent, or that this horse has found a comfortable level where it can place without ever quite seizing the moment. At Class 5 — the lower end of the race ladder — it has run seven times without winning, which suggests the level isn't too tough but the wins simply haven't materialised.

Insuspense is trained by Oliver Cole at Whatcombe in Oxfordshire, a yard that has sent out eight winners this season, so there is clearly ability in the team to get horses across the line. Cole will know better than anyone that a horse with this many placed efforts needs something to click — whether that's the right race, the right day, or just a small improvement in the finishing straight. Insuspense raced just yesterday, so it is very much an active project rather than a horse being nursed along.

The honest assessment is this: a horse that has never won but has placed half the time across sixteen races is not without merit. It shows up, it competes, and it finishes in the frame. Whether it can convert one of those near-misses into a first victory is the question that keeps the team — and presumably a few frustrated punters — coming back. For a horse whose very name seems written for this moment, the suspense is very much still on.
