That sole win came at Southwell in September 2025, and it arrived over the shorter distances where she clearly does her best work. At five to six-and-a-half furlongs, she has won 1 from 5 races, a 20% win rate that translates to roughly one win in every five attempts at that trip — meaningfully better than her overall record. It is a useful indicator that when conditions suit her, she is capable of getting the job done.
James Tate, who trains her from his Newmarket base, is having a strong season — 51 winners already — and he has been candid about why Inside Story has not always shown her best. Earlier this summer he pointed to a run at Yarmouth where she was simply too keen, pulling hard and burning through her energy before the race had really begun. Crucially, Tate noted that the race she ran in that day was one of the most competitive of its type all year, with the winner subsequently proving to be a smart horse. In other words, Inside Story was not embarrassed — she just needs to settle and let her ability do the talking.
She raced just yesterday, so she is very much a horse in the middle of a campaign. The recent form — finishing eighth, then fourth, then fifth in her last three completed runs — reads as workmanlike rather than exciting. But Tate's yard clearly thinks there is more to come, and a horse who wins 20% of her races at a preferred trip, trained by someone with 51 winners on the board this season, is not one to dismiss lightly. The ingredients are there. It is just a question of whether she puts them together.
