What makes Howth genuinely interesting is his partnership with jockey Stan Sheppard. Together they have won four of six races, a 67% win rate that hints at a real understanding between horse and rider. When Sheppard is aboard on normal ground at the right trip, Howth becomes a different proposition. He is also a specialist at Newton Abbot, where he has won two of three races—including his most recent victory on 30 August 2025. That course suits him, and his trainer Tom Lacey knows it. Lacey's yard at Woolhope, Herefordshire, has been in excellent form this season with 37 winners already, and Howth remains an active runner with two wins in his last six races.
The one limitation is stepping up in class. Howth has never won at the highest levels, recording zero wins from eight attempts at top-class racing. He belongs at a lower grade, where his stamina, his affinity for normal ground, and the Sheppard connection can work together. Still active after racing just yesterday, he represents solid value for those who back horses at their specialist course and preferred distance.
