Spencer himself believes Hawksbill has genuine potential, noting that a recent second-place finish at Kempton came against an impressive winner and that the horse ran on strongly enough to suggest improvement is coming. The trainer has earmarked the Esher Cup as a likely target, though he is also keeping one eye on the Italian 2,000 Guineas — an intriguing hint that Hawksbill might find his level abroad if things continue to stall at home.

The numbers suggest where Hawksbill's sweet spot lies. At distances between seven furlongs and a mile, he has won one from eight races — a 12% win rate that stands out sharply against his overall record of just one win from nineteen. Yet when stepped up to Class 2 races, the highest level at which he has competed, he has managed nothing from seven attempts. This hints that Hawksbill is a horse best suited to slightly lower-class company and at his preferred trip.
