The story of Gweedore's last couple of years is one of the unglamorous battles that characterize much of racing: sore fetlocks, splints, and time away from the track. He missed last season entirely with injury, and when he returned in April, a thrown splint—a minor but nagging problem—interrupted his comeback. Yet he still managed two runner-up finishes at Musselburgh that month, a sign that the engine was still there. His trainer, Katie Scott, based in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, has been methodical in bringing him back. She knows what he can do, particularly at the distances he loves: between a mile and a furlong and a mile and two furlongs, Gweedore has won 3 of 6 races, a 50% win rate that hints at a horse operating at his best at those trips.

Gweedore has become something of a course specialist at Ayr, winning 3 of his 8 races there. His real asset, though, is his preference for slightly soft ground: on those conditions, he has won 3 times from 9 attempts, a 33% win rate that is markedly better than his overall record. When the ground gives way, he settles into a rhythm and travels well. His most recent win came at Musselburgh in November, but that was nine months ago—a drought that mirrors his recent form, with just one fourth-place finish in his last six outings. His trainer has an eye toward autumn targets, particularly the Ayr Gold Cup, a major event where Gweedore has previously run in the first three. As Scottish ownership and a Scottish yard, there is real pride in having a runner in that race. For now, he is waiting for the ground to soften and another chance to show why he belongs among the Class 2 brigade.
