The Salisbury debut set the tone. Trainer David Menuisier, who operates out of Pulborough in West Sussex and has sent out 25 winners already this season, was deliberately measured going in. The yard doesn't go to a first race expecting to win — but the horse's homework had been good, and two of his working companions had won in the days before. What followed was a performance that earned a Racing Post Rating of 92, which Menuisier described as quite high for a horse racing for the first time. To put that in context: horses who go on to win the Vintage Stakes, one of the more prestigious races for young horses in Britain, typically run to that kind of rating on their first or second outing. So when a race of that quality came up at Goodwood this week, the team decided it was worth a shot — and the horse ran well to finish fourth, beaten about two lengths. Nobody thought it would be easy; the point was to find out where he stands.
What makes Goodwood Galaxy an interesting character is that he comes with quirks. Menuisier describes him as opinionated — a horse who wants to do things his own way rather than be told. The trainer's approach has been to work with that rather than against it, keeping things simple and keeping the horse happy. It's the same instinct, apparently, that his sire Kodi Bear was known for. At distances of seven furlongs to a mile, where he's been tried three times, he has won once — 1 from 3, or 33% — and that's almost certainly where his future lies. He raced just yesterday, so whatever comes next will need to wait, but there's clearly a trainer here who knows exactly what he's working with.
