The picture becomes clearer when you look at the distances that play to his strengths. He's a horse that needs that middle-distance sweet spot; stretched much further or cut much shorter, he doesn't have it. His recent form shows the inconsistency you'd expect from a battler at this level: a win, then a seventh, an eighth, a third, a second, a fourth. It's the profile of a horse that will have his days, particularly when conditions and distance align. Trainer Ian Williams, whose Worcestershire yard has sent out 96 winners this season alone, will know exactly where Giant's wheelhouse is. The jockey most associated with him, Neil Callan, hasn't managed to win aboard him from eight attempts, but that's racing—sometimes the partnership just doesn't spark, even if the horse is capable on its day.
