Gallant

The level Gallant operates at is worth understanding. Class 4 races sit in the middle of the British racing ladder — not the glamour events, but genuinely competitive racing where fields are full of horses with similar ability. And at that level, Gallant has been sharp: 2 wins from just 5 races, which means it has won 40% of its races in that company. That's a horse that belongs there and knows it.

The partnership with Oisin Murphy is one of the more interesting threads in Gallant's story. Murphy is one of the best jockeys in the country, and when he's been on board, Gallant has won 2 of their 6 races together — roughly 1 in every 3, which is a striking number. Most horses win nowhere near that often with any jockey, so when Murphy takes the ride, it's worth paying attention.

The recent form, however, is a concern. Gallant hasn't won in its last 6 races, and the sequence — finishing seventh, then missing a race entirely, then seventh again, eleventh, sixth, and second — doesn't suggest a horse building towards something. That run of results spans back to a win at Lingfield Park on 5th June 2025, over a year ago now. Before that, the first career win came at Kempton Park in October 2024. Two wins at two different tracks, separated by months — this is a horse that has shown it can do it, but not consistently.

Trained by Oli Rix out of Newmarket, Gallant is with a yard that has sent out 3 winners this season. Rix isn't one of the big names in Newmarket, but the operation clearly knows how to place a horse to give it a chance. Gallant raced just yesterday, which means the yard are keeping it busy and looking for the right opportunity. Whether that opportunity arrives soon is the question — the ability is clearly there, but a first win in over a year would do wonders for answering it.
