Philip Kirby trains Fircombe Hall out of East Appleton in North Yorkshire, and it is a yard in decent nick right now — 36 winners sent out already this season, which is a healthy return. Kirby clearly knows what this horse needs and where to place it, and the Wolverhampton pattern suggests those two things have been figured out. The track at Wolverhampton is an all-weather oval that suits certain horses almost uncannily, and Fircombe Hall appears to be one of them.

The recent form makes for interesting reading. Working backwards from the most recent race: unplaced, then fifth, then two second-place finishes, then sixth, then a win. That win last month was sandwiched between some inconsistent efforts, which is fairly typical of a horse competing regularly at the lower end of the class ladder — Class 6, where the majority of its 59 races and 7 of its 9 wins have come. There is nothing wrong with that level; it simply means you are watching a horse that competes hard in its own territory rather than chasing glory it cannot reach.

One footnote worth noting: Aiden Brookes has ridden Fircombe Hall 8 times without a win together, a combination that has yet to click despite the frequency of the partnership. Whether that changes is one of the small questions surrounding a horse that, at eight years old, has clearly found a home at Wolverhampton and shows no sign of slowing down. It raced just yesterday, which tells you everything about its constitution — this is a durable, active horse with a particular track it loves and a yard behind it that knows exactly how to use that to its advantage.
