Trained by David O'Meara at Upper Helmsley in North Yorkshire, Epic Poet reveals his best form at middle distances of a mile and three-quarters to two miles, winning 2 of 12 races over that trip — roughly 17 percent of the time. He performs best on quick, firm ground, which suits both his running style and the fast-ground tracks of the Middle East. His regular rider Daniel Tudhope has partnered him in 16 races, winning twice together. The horse's temperament appears to be key to his success; O'Meara notes that Epic Poet relaxes beautifully during races, which helps him stay at longer distances and gives him every chance to finish strongly. Yet the trainer also observes he is not always the bravest in a tight finish — a trait that cost him in a recent York race where he was second, finding traffic and drifting off the rail when he needed to be at his most resolute.

Bought for modest money at a horses-in-training sale, Epic Poet has proven that he is worth far more than his British win record suggests — a horse who finds his true level and peak earning power when sent abroad, and who continues to give his team reasons to keep him in training.
