What is striking about Elegant Erin is that almost any ground suits her. On fast, dry ground she has won 3 from 8 races — nearly 38%, or roughly 2 in every 5 outings. On wet or muddy ground she has won 3 from 7 — 43%, almost the same. Most horses have a clear preference; she simply gets on with it. Her trainer Paul Midgley, who operates out of Westow in North Yorkshire and has sent out 39 winners already this season, describes her as an honest, genuine horse who is easy to train — which at nine years old, having raced 45 times, tells you a lot about her constitution.
After that Beverley win in September, Midgley talked openly about looking for black type — a term for races prestigious enough to mark a horse's record permanently as a winner of something meaningful. The last six races have not brought a win, but a run of third, third, and sixth suggests she is not far away. She raced just yesterday, so Midgley is clearly keeping her busy and confident she has more to give. For a nine-year-old with 45 races on the clock, that level of faith from a trainer who knows her inside out says plenty.
