Put him on normal or fast ground and the results dry up just as quickly as the turf does. His recent form reads 2-10-13-4-9-8, and while a second-place finish is in there, the trend is of a horse being asked to perform in conditions that simply do not suit him. He has not won since Newbury in September 2024, now 19 months ago, and has gone six races without getting his nose in front.

The Newbury win is worth dwelling on. Newbury is a proper track — wide, galloping, fair — and winning there matters. It is not a fluke venue where a horse sneaks past tired rivals on a sharp bend.
