The headline moment came on 22 August 2024 at York, where Diligently won a top-tier Class 2 race — one of the better races you can win in Britain — at a big price that most punters had ignored. Cox was unfazed. He had deliberately run the horse over five furlongs at Sandown shortly beforehand, not to win, but to sharpen him up mentally. That race went badly wrong when Diligently got squeezed out against the rail with nowhere to go, finishing nine lengths behind the field. It looked like a disaster. It wasn't. Cox knew exactly what had happened, and York proved the point. As the trainer put it afterwards, Diligently had put that result well and truly behind him.

What has emerged since is a horse who increasingly looks like a specialist — and specialists are underrated in racing. On dry, fast ground, Diligently has won 3 times from 8 attempts, a win rate of 38%, or better than 1 in every 3 races. On soft or wet ground, that figure drops sharply. The conditions clearly matter. So does the venue: at Windsor, Diligently has won 2 of just 4 races, a record that puts him comfortably among the most reliable performers at that track. His most recent win came there just four weeks ago on 15 June 2026, and with a race as recently as yesterday, he is very much in the middle of a campaign.

Cox's yard has been in strong form this season, sending out 48 winners already, and Diligently looks like a horse who knows his best conditions and delivers when he finds them. He typically runs in Class 4 company — solid, competitive mid-level racing — but that York result shows he has the ability to step up when given the right opportunity. Cox noted after York that he felt the horse had scope to progress, and the Windsor win four weeks ago suggests that progress has continued.
