Diligent Harry

The numbers at Newcastle border on the extraordinary. He has won 3 of his 4 races there, a record that speaks for itself. When jockey Saffie Osborne won on him at Newcastle's All-Weather Championships in April 2025, she described him getting "lonely in front from the furlong pole" — meaning he'd already put the race to bed and was simply waiting for something to catch him. Nothing did. Osborne also mentioned he'd finished third in a Group 1 the previous year, and you can hear the genuine respect in her words when she says "this horse has a lot of class." She's right.

His winter campaign in early 2026 was quietly brilliant. Back-to-back Class 1 wins at Lingfield in January and February, his most recent coming on 21 February — just three months ago — showed no sign of a horse winding down. Rossa Ryan, who has ridden him in seven races and won two of them, said after Lingfield that he "seemed to have taken a step forward" and that he's versatile enough to handle both five and six furlongs. A horse that is still improving and still adaptable at eight is a rare thing.

Trainer Clive Cox, whose Lambourn yard has sent out 48 winners this season alone, has been characteristically measured but enthusiastic about Harry's prospects. He was described as "extremely positive" ahead of the Newcastle win last year and clearly sees more big days ahead. On normal ground — not too wet, not too firm — Harry is almost a different animal: 6 wins from just 11 races on those conditions, a remarkable 55% hit rate. Get the ground right, get him to Newcastle or Lingfield, and you have one of the most reliable big-race performers on the all-weather circuit. At eight, Diligent Harry is not a story that's wrapping up. If anything, it's still being written.
