The overall record tells a story of a horse that tries without quite delivering. Two wins and 12 places from 48 races means Desert Master finishes in the frame — the top three — regularly enough, but converting those good efforts into victories has been the problem. A 4% win rate overall works out as roughly 1 win in every 24 races, which explains why trainer Antony Brittain, based at Warthill in North Yorkshire, has had to be patient. The yard has sent out 23 winners this season, so there is clearly plenty going right at stable level — Desert Master simply asks more of you than most.

The most recent of those came in January 2025, and the first in December 2024, suggesting the track finally unlocked something in this horse relatively late in its career. Brittain had noted early on that Desert Master was bred for speed, sired by Blue Point — a dual Royal Ascot winner and one of the fastest horses of his generation — and it has taken time for that breeding to express itself in results.

The partnership with jockey Cam Hardie tells its own story: 21 races together and not a single win between them. That is a long run without reward for two individuals who clearly keep faith with each other. Recent form shows a string of placed efforts — two seconds among the last six outings — so the building blocks are there. Desert Master raced just yesterday, which means the yard are keeping him busy and looking for another opportunity. If that opportunity arrives at Southwell, over a short sprint, on normal ground, the record says: pay attention.
