Desert Master

Both victories have come at Southwell, and both have come in short, sharp sprints. Over distances under five furlongs, Desert Master has won 2 of his 7 races — that is winning nearly 1 in 3, a completely different animal to the plodder you might assume from the overall record. It suggests a horse who has a very specific set of conditions he needs: a particular track, a particular trip. Get those right, and he can be genuinely competitive. Get them wrong, and you are probably watching him finish mid-pack, as he does more often than not.

Southwell is where the story lives. He has raced there 8 times and won twice, which makes him one of the track's more reliable, if infrequent, winners. His first win came on 29 December 2024, followed swiftly by another on 15 January 2025 — two wins inside three weeks at the same venue, which for a horse of his profile is a proper purple patch. Trainer Antony Brittain, based at Warthill in North Yorkshire, is a yard that has sent out 23 winners this season, so there is clearly ability flowing through the operation. Brittain had noted early on that Desert Master was bred to be fast and precocious, with a dam who was a useful two-year-old herself. It has taken time for that breeding to show up on a racecourse, but those two January wins suggest it is in there somewhere.

The frustrating footnote is what has happened since. Desert Master has not won in his last six races, and jockey Cam Hardie, who has partnered him 21 times, is still waiting for a first win together — 0 from 21 is a long wait, even allowing for the fact that Hardie has clearly been involved across both good and difficult spells. He raced just yesterday, finishing sixth, second, eighth, fourth, second, and fifth across his most recent outings. Consistent placings, but the winner's enclosure remains elusive. Everything in his record says: take him back to Southwell, put him over a sharp five furlongs, and keep the faith.
