And that phrase — "when the mood takes it" — gets to the heart of what makes Desert Cop compelling and occasionally maddening. His rider Oisin Murphy, who knows him better than almost anyone having partnered him to 2 wins from 8 rides together (that is 1 in every 4, a strong record), put it bluntly after the Newmarket win in May 2024: you never quite know when Desert Cop is going to show up. Sometimes the zest is there, sometimes it is not. That unpredictability has followed him through 24 races and counting.

The Newmarket win remains the high-water mark. A Class 2 victory at one of British racing's most celebrated tracks, against decent horses, is a result that earns respect. Before that, he had won a Class 2 at Newcastle on the all-weather in April 2023, and before that his first career win at Kempton Park in February 2023 — so his breakthrough season was a genuine one. Since Newmarket, though, he has not won in six races, with his last six finishes reading 7th, 6th, 23rd, 24th, 17th, and 14th. Those middle two runs, in particular, are the sort of numbers that test a trainer's patience.

What adds an intriguing layer is his winter adventure in Bahrain, where trainer George Baker sent him to compete on the international stage. He finished second in two turf series races — and was flying so well one morning that Baker pulled him from a scheduled race and entered him in a Grade 1 instead. He won it. It is exactly the kind of impulsive, instinct-driven decision that Desert Cop seems to reward when everything clicks. Baker's yard at Chiddingfold has sent out 16 winners this season, so the operation is in form — the question is whether Desert Cop, now two years since his last victory, can find that spark again. He raced just yesterday, so the answer may already be on its way.
