Dartmouth Jet

The really interesting thing about Dartmouth Jet is the eleven-month gap since his last win. He has raced five times since that September success at Worcester, and while he managed to place in a couple of them — notably running third most recently — he has generally found the step up difficult. His form shows three sixth-place finishes among those last six runs, which suggests he is being asked to compete at a level where he is outgunned more often than not. For a horse with just the one win under his belt from six attempts, he needs to be carefully placed if he is going to add to that tally.

John Mackie's yard at Church Broughton is a decent operation with sixteen winners this season, so Dartmouth Jet is in a stable with plenty of firepower around him. Whether the trainer can find the right spot for this horse to break his losing streak again is the question now. At five years old, he is still relatively young in racing terms, but the gap since that Worcester win is a concern — it suggests either he has been struggling with form or fitness, or that the handicapper has been working against him. Either way, his the yard will be looking to engineer a return to the winner's circle sooner rather than later.
