The pattern is unmissable. On slightly soft ground, Dancing Tiger wins roughly 1 in every 2 races (2 wins from 4 attempts). Move him to firm, fast ground and his record collapses. What matters even more is distance: he thrives between 1m1f and 1m2f, winning 2 of his last 6 races at that trip and clearly uncomfortable when stretched beyond it. His trainer, Roger Teal, who is based at Lambourn and has sent out 22 winners already this season, has been explicit about this. Teal deliberately plans races around soft ground, and when conditions suit, the horse finds his rhythm. After Dancing Tiger's debut win at Goodwood in September 2025, jockey Marco Ghiani described him as being "in his comfort zone" — he was never asked a serious question and galloped right through to the line. Teal thinks the horse has room to improve at four after being on the weak side in his three-year-old year.
The puzzle is that at Class 5 (a modest level), he has won just once in five attempts, which is oddly flat for a horse with such a defined strength. That suggests Teal is still searching for the right race — the kind where the ground turns up squelchy, the distance sits at 1m1f or 1m2f, and the field is inviting. Find all three and Dancing Tiger becomes a horse to follow.
