It came at Class 6, which is the entry level of British racing — the kind of race where the pressure is lower and the fields are more open. And even at that level, the record is honest rather than flattering: 1 win from 13 races at that grade, a win rate of roughly 1 in 13 (about 8%). Placing five times across its career shows there is ability here, but turning that into a victory has proved elusive.

Richard Kingscote has been the jockey most associated with Crafty Spirit, partnering the horse in five of its races and landing that one career win together. That gives them a 20% win rate as a combination — one win from five — which sounds reasonable enough, but the broader picture tells a more complicated story. Crafty Spirit has not won in its last six races, and recent form reading 2-7-6-8-9 going backwards suggests the horse has drifted away from its best rather than building towards anything.

The horse is trained by John Wainwright, operating out of Norton in North Yorkshire. It is a yard that has sent out four winners this season, so there is clearly capability there. Crafty Spirit raced just yesterday, which means it is being kept very active — and that in itself speaks to a team that believes there is another good day somewhere in this horse yet. Whether Kempton Park or somewhere else eventually provides it remains to be seen, but for now, Crafty Spirit is one of those horses that racing quietly runs on: honest, present, and still searching.
