The most interesting thing about Captain Corelli is his love of fast, dry ground. On those conditions, he wins roughly one in every three races, compared to about one in seven across the board. He is also a course specialist at Beverley, where he has won three of eight races — an impressive 37 per cent win rate at that track. His last win came at Beverley on 24 September 2024, suggesting he has been without a breakthrough for nearly two years now. Trainer Julie Camacho, based in Norton, North Yorkshire, runs a prolific yard that has sent out 46 winners this season, and jockey Tom Kiely-Marshall has ridden Captain Corelli five times, winning twice — a 40 per cent record that hints at a useful partnership when conditions and the horse align.
What makes Captain Corelli worth watching is not that he is a threat in top races — he typically competes at Class 5 level, where his record is modest at two wins from fourteen tries — but that he remains capable of winning on his favoured ground at a track where he has form. A dry spell at Beverley with Kiely-Marshall up could bring another success. For a nine-year-old with a long career behind him, the door to wins is still not quite closed.
