Campaign Trail

Over those distances, Campaign Trail has won 2 of its 6 races — that is 1 in 3, which is a genuinely impressive conversion rate and suggests the horse finds its best rhythm when given enough ground to travel into a race rather than being asked to quicken early. Its home at this level is Class 4, one rung below the upper tier of British racing, where it has won 3 of 11 races. Winning more than 1 in 4 at a consistent level like that is the mark of a horse that belongs there and knows it.

The career began to take shape with a first win at Catterick Bridge in July 2023, and the most recent victory came at Doncaster in November 2024. That is now 19 months without a winner, and the last six runs — showing a best finish of second twice before results drifted to eighth and then a blank most recently — paint a picture of a horse searching for a bit of form. Raced just one day ago, Campaign Trail is as active as they come, and the trainer Kim Bailey and Mat Nicholls clearly have it fit and ready. Their yard has sent out 31 winners this season, so there is no shortage of confidence in the operation.

The question now is whether a return to its preferred distance and a track that suits can unlock another win. The ability is clearly there — four wins from 20 races at a competitive level, plenty of placed efforts, and a trainer team in good form. Campaign Trail is the kind of horse that rewards patience from those following it. When the pieces fall into place, it has shown it can win. The task is spotting when that moment arrives.
