The level Bust A Moon competes at is worth understanding. Class 6 is the entry level of British racing — these are races designed specifically for horses who find winning difficult, and yet even here the record stands at just 1 win from 15 races, a win rate of around 7%, or roughly 1 in every 15 attempts at this grade. That is a tough number to look at. Most horses at this level manage to win more frequently when they find their right conditions.

Recent form offers little encouragement either. The last six results read 11-6-11-10-3-9 — that third place a few runs back is the only glimmer in an otherwise unremarkable sequence. Regular jockey Charlie Bennett has ridden the horse six times without a winner between them, which is not a partnership that is building momentum. To be fair to both horse and rider, that winless run together simply reflects a horse that is finding life hard at the moment, rather than any single obvious fault.

Derek Shaw trains Bust A Moon from a small yard in Sproxton, Leicestershire, and the operation has sent out six winners already this season, so the yard clearly knows how to get a horse to the winner's enclosure. The question is whether Bust A Moon can rediscover whatever clicked at Beverley that May afternoon. Having raced just yesterday, the horse is clearly being kept busy and given every opportunity. Sometimes that is all it takes — the right day, the right race, and a reminder of what this horse looked like when everything went right.
