Look at the last five runs in reverse order: a third, then an eighth, then a sixth, then a second, and most recently a seventh. That dip in the middle and the latest effort are a concern, but the two placed finishes show there is ability in there somewhere. The trainer and team will be trying to work out which version of this horse turns up on race day.
Ismail Mohammed, who handles Brave Hunter out of his Newmarket base, has sent out 14 winners already this season, which tells you this is a yard capable of getting horses to perform. Newmarket is one of the great training centres in British racing — the wide open gallops and high concentration of quality stables mean horses there tend to be well-prepared. If Mohammed can find the right race and the right conditions for Brave Hunter, the raw material may already be there. The horse raced just yesterday, so it is firmly in active campaign mode, and the team clearly believes there is more to come.
At this stage, Brave Hunter reads like a work in progress — a horse that has shown enough to suggest a win is possible, but one that has not yet put everything together on the day that matters.
