Berkshire Sundance

The real story is about distance and ground. Over longer trips between one mile six furlongs and two miles, Berkshire Sundance wins more than half its races — five victories from nine attempts. That is the sweet spot. On slow, wet, or muddy ground, the horse has won two of four races and seems to relish the cut underfoot. Strip away those preferences and the record becomes ordinary, but when the race is at the right length on the right kind of day, Berkshire Sundance is a different proposition. It also clearly likes Kempton Park, winning two of four races there, which matters when planning where to run next.

Trainer Andrew Balding, whose Kingsclere yard in Hampshire has already sent out 202 winners this season, has done well to get the best from this horse. More tellingly, when Oisin Murphy rides Berkshire Sundance, the results improve sharply — the pair have won three races together from six outings, a 50% win rate that suggests real partnership. The horse typically competes at Class 4 level, where it wins roughly seven in every ten races, suggesting it is well-suited to this grade and probably at its ceiling in terms of competition.

Recent form shows mixed results. After winning at Lingfield Park on 31 January, eight months ago now, Berkshire Sundance has been run five times with a recent second place, a couple of sixth-place finishes, and some further back efforts. Having raced just a day ago, it is clearly an active part of the yard's plans, but the eight-month gap since the last win is a concern. At six years old, with a win rate that peaks at specific distances and ground types, this horse's value lies in finding the perfect race rather than hoping for broad improvement.
