Trained by Miss Natalia Lupini out of Banbridge in County Down — a yard that has sent out 17 winners already this season, so clearly a place that knows how to prepare a horse — Barnso first won at Dundalk back in October 2023, then followed it up with a win at Fairyhouse in May 2024. That second win is now 25 months in the rearview mirror, which is a long time to be waiting. Six races without a win since then, with a recent run of 4th, 4th, 4th, 6th, 18th, and 4th, tells the story of a horse hovering near the front without breaking through.

When W J Lee is in the saddle, there is a noticeably better story to tell. The pair have won 2 of their 5 races together — that is 40%, or roughly 2 in every 5 rides — which is a genuinely impressive conversion rate at any level of racing. For context, most jockey-and-horse partnerships at this stage would be happy with 1 in 5. That number suggests the partnership suits Barnso and is worth watching when Lee gets the leg up again.

The one area where Barnso's profile gets slightly complicated is at the top end of the sport. In three races at Class 2 level — some of the better races in Ireland — it has drawn a blank every time. That is not unusual for a three-year-old still finding its feet, but it does suggest the horse is more comfortable a step below that company, particularly over seven furlongs to a mile, where it has won 1 from 3 races and run with more purpose.

Barnso raced just yesterday, so fitness is not the question. The question is whether the right combination of trip, ground, and jockey can unlock that winning feeling again after a long wait.
