The standout detail is what happens when the ground turns soft or muddy. On those days, Barenboim is a different proposition entirely, winning four of eight races (50%) compared to just two wins from 32 on faster, drier ground. That's the kind of pattern that makes trainers sit up and pay attention. Tom Dascombe, based at Upper Lambourn, clearly knows how to get the best out of this horse, and his yard has been firing on all cylinders this season with 22 winners already.

Newcastle brings out the best in Barenboim too. The horse has won twice in five races there—a genuine course specialist. Distance-wise, Barenboim finds its sweet spot at around 1m3f to 1m4f, winning three of 11 races at that trip. Most of its wins have come in Class 4 races (3 from 16), the kind of competitive but not top-tier contests where consistency counts.

The recent picture is less encouraging. Barenboim hasn't found the winner's enclosure in six races, though the returns have stayed respectable with placements in three of those runs. Pierre-Louis Jamin, the horse's most frequent jockey with nine rides, has partnered the horse to one win together. The last victory came at Kempton Park back in January—eight months ago now—which is starting to feel like a drought for a horse that was once winning regularly. Still, at eight years old and raced by a sharp trainer who knows its quirks, there will be opportunities ahead, especially if the ground goes soft and Newcastle comes around again.
