The key to understanding her is simple: she loves wet, muddy ground. In five races on soft or heavy going, she has won three of them — a 60% win rate that is frankly extraordinary. Most horses at this level win around 1 in 5 or 6 races across their careers, so winning 3 of 5 in a specific set of conditions tells you this horse is not just competitive in the mud — she is transformed by it. Trainer Edward Bethell, based at Middleham in North Yorkshire, also discovered something else important: drop her back to the shortest distances and she really fires. His stable had suspected it for a while — her work at home had always been electric — but it took some nerve to act on it given she had previously been campaigned over longer trips under her former trainer.

The results since making that switch have been striking. She won well at Redcar, then ran a bold race at York in a higher-class contest despite a difficult draw wide of the field. Her Bath win in April 2026 came in a proper top-level race and earned her "black type" — a mark in the record books that tells the world this horse has competed at the elite level. That opened the door to targets like the Temple Stakes, one of the most prestigious short-distance races in the calendar. Her most recent win, at Southwell in September 2025, came in a Class 2 race — one of the better races in Britain — and jockey Billy Loughnane described a horse who travels beautifully through a race but needs her finishing burst managed carefully, which is exactly why the yard tried headgear to sharpen her focus in those final crucial strides.

What makes Azure Angel genuinely interesting is how much of her story is still being written. Bethell's yard has sent out 61 winners already this season — this is a stable operating at full confidence — and she is currently active, having raced just one day ago. A horse who has found her niche, is improving at six, and now has big-race entries on the horizon is a horse worth keeping an eye on.
