His debut win at Kempton in November 2024 set the tone. Jockey Ed Greatrex told Racing TV he was "very professional" that day, and Beckett admitted it came as a genuine surprise — the plan had always been to treat him as a "next year" horse, one whose pedigree suggested he'd need time to develop. Winning first time out was ahead of schedule. The fact that he then followed it up with a second win at Leicester in May 2025 — before being given a break — suggests he's been quietly making good on that early promise.
The Leicester win offered a more detailed picture of what Aurel actually is. His jockey had to think quickly, switching him wide when the horse in front wasn't quickening, then letting him stride into a rhythm he clearly relished. The rider's observation afterwards was telling: Aurel is still mentally immature, green enough to need the reassurance of a rail to lean on, but talented enough that once he finds his stride, he covers the ground in a way that's hard to ignore. That combination — raw ability wrapped in inexperience — is exactly what keeps trainers excited about a horse's ceiling.
Beckett's words from a stable tour in April are worth noting. He said Aurel had come forward over the winter, that there's speed in his pedigree but he looks like he'll stay well — meaning he should be equally effective over longer distances as the season progresses. He also hinted at trial entries, suggesting the horse might be aimed at something more ambitious. Most strikingly, the jockey after Leicester said flatly that whatever Aurel achieves in the first half of the year will likely be "nothing compared to the second."
He returns now after roughly 10 months off, a long enough break to make his first run back a question mark. His recent form reads 7-1-4-1 — two wins sandwiching a fourth and a seventh — which is the profile of a horse still finding his way, not one that has peaked. If Beckett and his team are right about the trajectory, the real Aurel may not have shown up yet.
