Arctic Thunder

The standout moment of Arctic Thunder's career came at Ascot on 10 May 2024, when the horse won a Class 2 race — one of the top tier of races in Britain. Winning at that level, at Ascot of all places, is a genuine achievement. It suggested a horse with real ability on its day, the kind that can mix it with some of the best around. The first win had come just a few months earlier, at Kempton Park in January 2024, so for a brief spell last year, things were moving in exactly the right direction.

The problem is what has happened since. Arctic Thunder has not won in the last six races, and the most recent form figures — 8, 6, 7, 12, 4, 3 — paint a picture of a horse that has been consistently finishing in the middle or back of the field. A twelfth-place finish sits among them. Whatever clicked at Ascot in May 2024 has not clicked again in the 26 months since, and that gap between last winning and racing yesterday is the central puzzle here.

There is a clear distance sweet spot worth noting: over seven furlongs to a mile, Arctic Thunder has won 2 of 9 races — a win rate of 22%, or roughly 1 in every 4.5. That is a meaningfully better record than anywhere else. And yet when stepped up to the bread-and-butter Class 3 level — the grade where this horse competes most often — the record reads zero wins from eight attempts. That combination is a little baffling. Good enough to beat Class 2 company at Ascot, but winless at Class 3. Racing does that sometimes.

Ed Walker, based at Upper Lambourn, is a respected trainer whose yard has sent out 76 winners this season alone — so the operation around Arctic Thunder is not the issue. The horse is active, raced just yesterday, and is clearly being kept busy. The question is whether there is another performance like Ascot still in there, or whether that day in May 2024 was the peak of the story.
