Against The Wind

The partnership with jockey Tom Eaves looks like the best angle. They have won three of their eight races together — a 38% win rate — which towers above the horse's overall record. That kind of consistency suggests a real understanding between horse and rider. Kevin Ryan's Hambleton yard has been prolific this season with 45 winners, the kind of operation that knows how to get the best out of its inmates. Against The Wind has also proved it has a preference worth noting: on slow, wet ground it wins two out of every three races, compared to a 33% rate at top tracks in normal conditions. That tells you the horse has genuine ability but is much happier when the ground is holding beneath its hooves.

The real question now is whether the recent form is a blip or a sign the horse has hit a ceiling. Three months of racing without a win at this level is worth watching carefully, but the recent third-place finishes suggest it is still competitive. If the yard can thread it back into races run on soft or heavy ground, and if Eaves is in the saddle, Against The Wind could rediscover the winning habit it showed so clearly earlier in its career.
