Adjuvant

The numbers tell an interesting story. Adjuvant wins roughly 1 in every 12 races overall — not spectacular — but zoom in on his best distance, between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, and it improves to 2 wins from 15 races, around 1 in 8. More striking is what happens when he goes to Newmarket: 2 wins from just 5 races there. That is a 40% win rate at a single track, which is the kind of stat that makes experienced punters sit up. Most horses are lucky to win at the same track twice in a career; Adjuvant has done it, and both of his career wins have come on that course.

The catch is that he hasn't won anywhere since May 2023 — over three years ago now — and his typical level of competition, Class 2, has produced nothing in 15 attempts. These are among the better races in Britain, and converting good performances into wins at that level has so far proved beyond him. His recent form reads 7-6-3-14-2-10, which is patchy, though that second place a few runs back hints the ability is still there.

Bell's reference to the Northumberland Plate is significant context. It's one of the most famous long-distance races on the flat calendar, run up in Newcastle, and Adjuvant has been in the mix before — fifth a couple of years ago behind the winner Calling The Wind in a race he was among the favourites for. He came close and didn't quite get there. Now, with rain potentially on the way and a trainer who clearly still believes in him, the question is whether a horse who has been waiting patiently for the right conditions can finally put it all together on the big day.
