Adjuvant

The key to understanding Adjuvant is simple: it needs wet or muddy ground to show its best. Bell has said so plainly — this is a horse that has been "completely marooned" this spring because the soft ground it craves has simply not arrived. That kind of dependence on conditions is both a strength and a curse. When the skies open and the track becomes heavy, Adjuvant transforms. When they don't, it plods around finishing fifth or tenth, doing little wrong but achieving little either.

What makes the horse genuinely interesting is what it has done at Newmarket specifically. Both of its career wins have come at its home track, and it has placed there too — 2 wins from just 5 races at Newmarket works out at 40%, which is a remarkable hit rate at any level of the sport. For context, most horses win at far fewer than 1 in 10 of their visits to any single track. Adjuvant clearly loves the place. It also performs better over longer distances — across races between a mile and six furlongs and two miles, it has won 2 from 14 (14%), which is more than double its overall rate.

The frustrating part is that Adjuvant has spent most of its career competing in Class 2 races — some of the better contests in Britain — and has yet to win at that level from 15 attempts. Bell has his eye on the Northumberland Plate on 28 June, a race the horse nearly won a couple of years ago before finishing fifth behind the winner. That near-miss, and the trainer's willingness to aim at a big occasion, tells you the yard believes there is still a performance in this horse when conditions finally fall its way. It raced just yesterday, so it is very much still in training and still in the hunt. The rain just needs to arrive.
