What makes this particularly striking is that it represents a sharp reversal from where she was. Twelve months ago she was winning roughly 1 in every 10 races, a perfectly respectable rate for a rider with the seven-pound allowance she still carries, which tells you she is still developing as a professional. That allowance — the "(7)" next to her name — is given to less experienced riders to make their horses carry less weight, essentially levelling the playing field while they find their feet. She earned that form last year. The winners have simply dried up since.

Her most regular platform has come through trainer P J Rothwell's yard, where she has had 37 of her 41 rides this season. That kind of loyalty from a trainer means something — yards do not keep putting a jockey up if they have lost faith entirely. Rothwell is clearly backing her to come through this lean spell, and with four years in the saddle since she started out in 2021, she has enough experience to know that droughts like this are part of a riding career rather than the end of one.

The honest truth is that 41 races without a winner is a hard stretch. But the number that matters more than zero is four — four years of race-riding, building the instincts and racecraft that only come from doing it over and over. When the winners do come back, and for a rider with her recent history they almost certainly will, this season will look like exactly what it probably is: a temporary dip rather than a permanent decline.
