Zu Run

What makes Zu Run's record worth understanding is the class level it operates at. Nearly half of its career races — 19 of 41 — have come at Class 5, which is the entry level of British racing, the kind of races designed for horses that are honest rather than exceptional. At that level, Zu Run has won 3 from 19, roughly 1 in every 6 attempts, which is actually a decent return. The trouble is that even in the races where conditions suit it best, consistency has been elusive. Those three wins have come at three different venues, spread across nearly three years, with the first arriving at Chelmsford in August 2022.

The riding arrangement is an interesting subplot. Billy Loughnane, who is also the son of trainer Mark Loughnane, has partnered Zu Run five times without a win between them. That is not necessarily damning — plenty of jockey-horse combinations take time to click — but it does stand out given that the yard itself is in decent form, having sent out 25 winners already this season. Mark Loughnane's operation at Rock Farm in Worcestershire clearly knows how to get horses winning. Zu Run, for whatever reason, has not been the one carrying those colours into the winner's enclosure.

The horse raced just yesterday, which tells you the team are keeping it busy and believe there is another win in there somewhere. Whether that belief is rewarded will likely depend on finding a race at the right class level on a day when everything falls into place. It has happened before, and three times at that. The question is whether it can happen again.
