She described Woodstock as a likeable, straightforward sort, which in trainer-speak is genuine affection rather than faint praise. She noted he had not had many chances on grass when he arrived, and that decent ground was the key to getting him out on turf. The honest part of the picture is that Woodstock has not won in his last six races, with that Newbury victory in August 2024 now 20 months in the rear-view mirror. Recent form reads 7-6-2-3-8-2 — plenty of placed efforts but nothing converted. He raced just yesterday, so the legs are still warm. Whether another crack at Newbury, on the right ground, over his best trip, is enough to end that drought is the interesting question. The ingredients for a win are clearly there. They just need to align.
