Wicksey got started at Newcastle in February 2026, and that track has become something of a home away from home — two wins from three visits, which is the kind of record that makes trainers keep booking the horsebox north. On normal ground, the horse is even more emphatic: three wins from four races, a 75% hit rate that tells you conditions matter and Wicksey knows exactly what it likes underfoot. Step it up to the longer distances — a mile and six furlongs to two miles — and it wins two from three. This is a horse that gets better, not worse, the further it runs.

Ben Haslam trains Wicksey out of Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire, and it is clearly a yard in fine form — 35 winners already this season from a stable that has produced some smart performers over the years. Jockey Andrew Mullen has been the man in the saddle for most of Wicksey's career, and their partnership reads impressively: three wins from six rides together, meaning Mullen wins every other time he climbs aboard. That is an unusually productive combination and suggests the two have developed a real understanding.

At Class 6 level — the entry-level tier of British racing — Wicksey has been close to unbeatable, winning all three races at that grade. The honest reading of that is straightforward: this horse is too good for the company it has been keeping, and the yard will face decisions soon about stepping it up. Wicksey raced just yesterday and won at Stratford-on-Avon as recently as 29 June, which means this is a horse in the form of its life right now, racing regularly and thriving on it. For a three-year-old still learning the game, that combination of consistency, course form, and a trainer firing on all cylinders makes Wicksey one of the more compelling young horses to follow this summer.
