Six wins from 19 races is a strong record, and what makes Welsh Charger particularly interesting is where and how those wins have come. Ludlow is clearly a happy hunting ground — two wins from just three visits, which is the kind of ratio that makes trainers keep coming back. That's not a coincidence; some horses simply take to certain tracks, whether it's the shape of the bends, the undulations, or just familiarity. Ludlow seems to suit this horse down to the ground. Wet or muddy conditions are another unlock: two wins from three races on soft or heavy ground, a 67% win rate that suggests Welsh Charger genuinely relishes getting its hooves in the mud while others are slipping and sliding.

The biggest win of its career came at Musselburgh on 1 February 2025 — a Class 2 race, which means one of the better races in Britain. That's a significant scalp, and it tells you Welsh Charger is not simply a horse that beats modest competition on a good day. It can go up a level and deliver. Alastair Ralph, based at Bridgnorth in Shropshire, has had 26 winners from his yard this season alone, so this is a trainer in fine form. When Welsh Charger steps back into the ring after its 45-day break, it does so from a stable that knows how to have horses ready.

The one note of caution is that the Musselburgh win was 14 months ago, and the last six races have brought nothing better than a fourth. The form figures — 6, pulled up, 6, 4, 14, 5 — are patchy at best. But horses can rediscover form, especially when conditions click into place. If Welsh Charger turns up at a course it likes, on a wet day, with regular partner David Noonan in the saddle — three wins from seven rides together, winning 43% of the time, almost one in every two — then it's exactly the sort of horse a knowledgeable friend would quietly mention before the race.
