Wee Mary

The good news for her the yard is that both wins came relatively recently. She broke through at Newcastle on 24 January this year, then claimed a second victory at Musselburgh on 06 June — but that was three months ago now, and she has not won since. Her recent form has been a frustrating mix of places: in her last six races, she has finished fourth no fewer than four times, with a tenth place and a seventh thrown in. That pattern of narrowly missing the mark, race after race, suggests a horse who is competitive at her level but lacks that final gear when other runners make their move.

Wee Mary races at Class 6 level — smaller, competitive races — and wins just 6% of her races at that standard, taking the form home once from sixteen attempts. She is trained by Jim Goldie at Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire, a yard that has sent out 88 winners this season and clearly knows how to find races for her. Kaiya Fraser has been her regular jockey with five rides together, though they have not yet combined for a win. Given that Wee Mary was out again just a day ago, she remains very much in work, and at four years old she still has time to rack up more victories — though on current form, her the yard will need to find the exact right race to see her back in the winner's circle.
