The horse is by Poet's Word, a solid sire who has produced plenty of useful sorts, and comes out of a Beneficial mare, a respectable cross that suggests a horse with at least some pedigree going for it. Elliott's yard is in flying form this season with 210 winners already under their belt, so the trainer clearly knows what he is doing. Whether Water Mill turns out to be the next star or simply a useful middle-distance horse remains to be seen, but that's the gamble and the fun of watching debuts.
