The recent form makes for sobering reading. Over the last six races, the best finish has been seventh, with placings of eighth, fifteenth, twentieth, and eleventh also in that stretch. That kind of trajectory — drifting toward the back of the field more often than not — suggests a horse that is finding life tough at its current level rather than one on the verge of a breakthrough.

What adds a layer of intrigue is that War Rooms has been tried four times in Class 1 company, the very top tier of British racing, without managing a win. That is a bold placement for a horse with one career victory, and it hasn't paid off yet. Whether that reflects genuine ambition from the trainer or a search for the right race is hard to say, but it does give War Rooms an unusually high-profile résumé for a horse of its record.

Gerard Keane trains the horse from his yard in Trim, County Meath, and has sent out 10 winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to the track in winning form. War Rooms raced just yesterday and remains an active runner, which at least shows there are no obvious physical concerns keeping the horse off the track. Whether it can rediscover the form that led to that Doncaster win in the summer of 2023 remains the question — but with six races now gone without a victory, the answer hasn't come yet.
