That narrow band matters; find a horse that runs better at a particular trip and you have found something concrete. Trainer Ben Haslam, based at Middleham Moor in North Yorkshire, has saddled 35 winners this season and clearly keeps War Howl in work, entering it regularly in Class 4 company — the mid-range level where most racing happens. At that grade, the horse has won 1 from 11, which is exactly in line with its overall form.

The recent history is discouraging. War Howl's last six races show a pattern of mid-field finishes — third, seventh, ninth, tenth, eighteenth, eleventh — a slow slide downward before that tenth-place run a week ago. The horse raced just yesterday, suggesting it remains sound and active, but there is little sign of improvement. It is the kind of horse that has its place in racing without ever quite breaking through, and unless Haslam can find the right race at the right distance with the right conditions, War Howl looks destined to remain a frequent runner with infrequent victories.
