Ross Burdon's Newmarket yard has found the sweet spot for this horse, and it shows most clearly on normal ground. When the track isn't too soft or bone-hard, Waistcoat transforms: three wins from six races on those conditions is a 50 per cent win rate, almost twice the career average. The horse is also a middle-distance specialist of sorts, thriving over 5 furlongs to 6½ furlongs — it has won five of its 11 races at those trips, a remarkable 45 per cent win rate. The problem is that Waistcoat spends most of its time in Class 5 company, where it has won only once from 11 races. This tells you everything: the horse is genuinely strong when conditions and distance align, but it struggles badly when stepped up in class.

Rhys Clutterbuck has ridden Waistcoat twice, winning both times — a 33 per cent record that suggests a real partnership. The horse's most recent win came at Newbury on 23 July, three months ago, but last time out it finished seventh. That's typical of its current form. Over the last six races, Waistcoat has been erratic: a fifth, two finishes in the top 3, and then a collapse into mid-field. The inconsistency is the defining trait. When Burdon can secure the exact conditions the horse needs — normal ground, middle distances, the right class level — Waistcoat wins. Everything else is a gamble.
