The really interesting thing about Waistcoat is how dramatically the ground matters. On normal, standard conditions, the horse is genuinely good — it has won 3 of 5 races (60% win rate) on such ground, which is the kind of consistency trainers dream about. The shorter distances suit it best too. Ask Waistcoat to run between 5 furlongs and 6 and a half furlongs, and it wins half its races (5 wins from 10). Put it on longer trips or in wet, muddy ground, and it drops away sharply. This is a horse with a type: faster ground, shorter distances, and it flourishes.

Waistcoat's most recent win came at Newbury four weeks ago on 23 July 2026, part of a useful spell where it won 2 of its last 6 races. Before that, a second place and a win over the previous three outings. It is far from flashy, but there is honest form here, the kind you can build plans around if you understand what makes it tick. The usual rider is Sean Levey, though they have only combined for one win from 6 attempts together — a reminder that jockey partnerships are not everything.

At Class 5 level, the horse struggles badly, winning just 1 of 11 races (9%), which suggests its ceiling is either below that standard or it simply does not enjoy the tighter racing those contests demand.
