Wade Out

The most striking thing about Wade Out is not just what it has achieved, but how it has done it. By all accounts, this horse is genuinely lazy. Sean Bowen, who has ridden it in 11 of its 14 races and won 5 of them — nearly 1 in every 2 — has been candid about what it takes to get the best from the horse. After Cheltenham in November 2025, where Wade Out won a Class 1 race — one of the most prestigious events in British racing — Bowen admitted the horse was barely going forward and was getting in close to its fences because of it. What kept it in the race was sheer stubbornness: it kept finding more when asked. That is a quality that matters enormously over long distances. Any horse can run well when things go smoothly. A horse that grinds it out when it's barely in the race is a different animal altogether.

Trainer Olly Murphy, whose yard at Wilmcote in Warwickshire has sent out 146 winners this season alone, describes Wade Out as "a bit of an enigma" — a horse that makes life difficult for itself but somehow keeps delivering. He has spoken about how the longer the trip, the better Wade Out tends to be, which makes sense: a lazy horse needs time to warm into a race, and over three miles or more it has the room to do exactly that.

The recent form looks slightly mixed at first glance — sixth, sixth, and fourth sandwiched around two wins — but the key detail is that both of those wins came at the sport's biggest venues. The Cheltenham win in November 2025 announced Wade Out as a genuine contender at the top table, and a win at Aintree this week confirmed it was no fluke. Winning 1 in every 5 races at Class 1 level might sound modest, but most horses never win at that level at all.

At seven, Wade Out is entering what should be its prime years. It is lazy, it is awkward, it is — in Murphy's own word — an enigma. But it keeps winning at the biggest tracks in the country, which is really the only thing that matters.
