The recent form figures tell their own story: 6-4-9-5-7-3, read from most recent to oldest. That third place at the end of the sequence shows there was a moment of promise early on, but the last few runs have been disappointing, including a ninth. At Class 5 — the entry-level tier of British racing — Venetian Romance has gone 0 from 3, which means it hasn't been able to win even at the easiest level of competition it has faced. For a horse still learning the game, there is time yet, but the results haven't given much to work with.
Where there is genuine reason for optimism is in the yard behind the horse. Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, based at Elmbridge in Worcestershire, have sent out 49 winners already this season — a serious tally that tells you this is a team that knows how to get horses to perform. A horse trained by a yard firing at that kind of rate isn't short of opportunity or expertise. The question is simply whether Venetian Romance can find a way to translate its potential into a result, and having raced as recently as yesterday, the team clearly haven't given up on finding that breakthrough.
