At three years old, Venetian Romance is still relatively young and learning the game, which is worth keeping in mind. Horses of this age are often still developing physically and mentally, and it is not unusual for one to take time before things click. The question is when — and whether — that moment arrives.
The horse competes at Class 5 level, which sits towards the lower end of the racing ladder and is essentially where horses go to find races they can be competitive in. Venetian Romance has raced three times at that level without winning, which is a modest record at a grade where a win really ought to be within reach if the talent is there. That said, the horse raced just yesterday and is clearly being kept busy, which suggests the team at least believes there is something to work with.
That team is the yard of Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, based in Elmbridge, Worcestershire. With 49 winners already on the board this season, this is a yard that clearly knows how to get horses winning — which makes the patience being shown with Venetian Romance all the more interesting. A stable firing at that volume tends to place horses in races where they have a genuine chance, so the fact that Venetian Romance has not yet taken one of those chances is something to note. Whether a different race, different conditions, or simply a bit more maturity does the trick remains to be seen. For now, this is a horse whose story is very much still being written.
