The recent form makes for tough reading too. Over the last six races, Vecchio's finishing positions read 5-7-8-10-8-10 — working backwards from the most recent — meaning the horse has been finishing well down the field and, if anything, heading in the wrong direction. Fifth was the best of it, but the subsequent runs have drifted further back. Raced just yesterday, Vecchio is clearly still being kept busy, which suggests trainer Scott Dixon believes there is something still worth chasing.
Dixon's yard at Rolleston in Nottinghamshire has had a productive season, sending out 33 winners, so this is not a struggling operation — they clearly know how to get horses winning. That Vecchio has not broken through despite being in active training with a yard that wins races regularly makes the puzzle all the more curious. Sometimes a horse simply takes a long time to find its moment, and sometimes it never quite does. At six years old, time is not endless, but it has not entirely run out either.
